7. Who is the One who is our Mediator? 1 Timothy 2:5.
NOTE: ‘No man can look within himself and find anything in his character that will recommend him to God, or make his acceptance sure. It is only through Jesus, whom the Father gave for the life of the world, that the sinner may find access to God. Jesus alone is our Redeemer, our Advocate and Mediator; in Him is our only hope for pardon, peace, and righteousness. It is by virtue of the blood of Christ that the sin-stricken soul can be restored to soundness. Christ is the fragrance, the holy incense which makes your petition acceptable to the Father. Then can you not say:
“Just as I am, without one plea,
But that Thy blood was shed for me,
And that Thou bid’st me come to Thee,
O Lamb of God, I come.”’
Selected Messages, book 1, pages 332-333.
8. What makes Jesus Christ the only possible mediator for us with our Father? John 1:3; Philippians 2:6-7. Consider Galatians 6:2.
NOTE: ‘It is worthwhile to emphasise the qualifications of our “merciful and faithful High Priest.” He is the eternal Son of God and He is God. John 1:1. He acted as the mediatorial agent in the creation of all things, and continues to act in upholding all things. [Hebrews 1:3] He took the same flesh and blood in which we share. By His death He conquered the devil, and brought deliverance to those who were his captives. He is both victim and priest. No merely human being can claim to possess these qualifications, and therefore no merely human being can really be our “merciful and faithful high priest.” Jesus is also the exclusive mediator. “For there is one God, one mediator also between God and men, Himself man, Christ Jesus.” 1 Timothy 2:5. Jesus so completely identified Himself with our common humanity that there is no place for a human mediator to bring us to Him, and He is so completely identified with God that there is no need of a supposedly semi-divine person to emphasise and make efficacious His plea in our behalf. Jesus, the God-man, is the only and the all-sufficient priest and mediator. We are safe in committing our cases to Him. We should be willing to trust everything to the hand that was nailed to the cross for us. “For in that He Himself hath suffered being tempted, He is able to succour them that are tempted.” Hebrews 2:18.’ W. W. Prescott, The Saviour of the World, page 94.
